For thousands of years, humans have looked up at the stars and asked the ultimate question: Are we alone in the universe? Until the 1990s, we didn't even know if there were other planets outside our solar system. Today, we know the universe is overflowing with them.
What is an Exoplanet?
An exoplanet (short for extrasolar planet) is simply any planet that orbits a star other than our Sun. Because stars are unimaginably bright and planets are incredibly tiny and dim, taking a direct picture of an exoplanet is nearly impossible. It's like trying to photograph a firefly flying next to a blinding searchlight from a hundred miles away.
How Do We Find Them?
If we can't see them, how do we know they exist? Astronomers use clever tricks, primarily the Transit Method.
Space telescopes like Kepler and TESS stare at thousands of stars simultaneously. If a planet happens to orbit in front of its host star from our point of view, it blocks a tiny fraction of the star's light. The star "dims" slightly for a few hours. By measuring these tiny, regular dips in starlight, scientists can determine the planet's size, orbit, and even what its atmosphere is made of!
The Goldilocks Zone
Not every exoplanet is a good candidate for life. Most discovered so far are "Hot Jupiters"—massive gas giants orbiting so close to their star that they are scorching infernos.
What scientists are truly hunting for are Earth-sized rocky planets situated in the Habitable Zone (also affectionately called the "Goldilocks Zone"). This is the specific orbital distance around a star where it is not too hot and not too cold, allowing for liquid water to pool on the surface—the key ingredient for life as we know it.
As of today, astronomers have confirmed the existence of over 5,000 exoplanets, with billions more waiting to be discovered just in our Milky Way galaxy alone.
