Mars has captured human imagination for generations. From science fiction novels to billion-dollar space agencies, the goal is clear: becoming a multi-planetary species. But the Red Planet is not exactly a welcoming host. Living on Mars will require overcoming some of the most extreme environmental challenges ever faced by humanity.
Challenge 1: The Atmosphere
If you were to step out onto the Martian surface without a spacesuit, you wouldn't just hold your breath—you wouldn't be able to. The atmosphere on Mars is about 100 times thinner than Earth's and is composed of 95% carbon dioxide.
To survive, habitats will need to be perfectly sealed, pressurized, and equipped with completely closed-loop life support systems that recycle every drop of moisture and oxygen.
Challenge 2: The Cold
Mars is much further from the Sun than Earth is, and its thin atmosphere cannot trap heat. The average temperature on Mars is a bitter -80 degrees Fahrenheit (-60 degrees Celsius). In winter at the poles, it can drop to -195 Fahrenheit. Spacesuits and habitats will require constant, robust heating systems powered by solar or nuclear energy.
Challenge 3: Deadly Radiation
Earth is protected by a powerful global magnetic field that deflects dangerous solar winds and cosmic rays. Mars lost its magnetic field billions of years ago.
Any astronaut on the surface will be bombarded by high levels of radiation, drastically increasing the risk of cancer and radiation sickness. Future Martian homes will likely need to be built underground, inside lava tubes, or covered by several feet of Martian soil (regolith) to block the radiation.
Challenge 4: Low Gravity
Gravity on Mars is only 38% of Earth's. While bounding around on the surface sounds fun, long-term exposure to low gravity causes bone density loss, muscle atrophy, and cardiovascular issues. Astronauts will require intense daily exercise regimens, similar to those used on the International Space Station, to maintain their health.
The Bottom Line
We absolutely have the foundational technology to send humans to Mars, and we are developing the tools to keep them alive there. The first missions will be dangerous, difficult, and expensive, resembling Antarctic research stations rather than sprawling cities. But stepping onto another planet will be the greatest adventure in human history.
