Since the dawn of human observation, Mercury has been a flickering enigma in the twilight. The Sumerians recorded it as early as 3,000 BCE, while the Babylonians associated it with Nabu, the god of writing and destiny. To the ancient Greeks, it was a dual entity: Apollo when seen in the morning and Hermes when it appeared in the evening. Eventually, the Romans bestowed the name we use today, honoring the winged messenger of the gods because of the planets rapid trek across the sky. This celestial speedster completes an entire orbit in just 88 Earth days, making it the fastest traveler in our neighborhood.

Our modern understanding was revolutionized by two daring robotic explorers. NASA’s Mariner 10 was the first to visit in the mid-1970s, performing three flybys and revealing a moon-like surface that stunned scientists. However, it was the MESSENGER mission (Mercury Surface, Space Environment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) that truly pulled back the curtain. Physical Structure

Mercury is often called the Iron Planet, and for good reason.
