History & Significance

The history of Mars is as old as human history; its red glow in the sky has drawn attention since the time of ancient civilizations. Known in Ancient Egypt as "Har decher," or "The Red One," Mars was identified with Ares, the god of war, in Greek mythology, and in the Roman Empire, it was associated with the god Mars, who assumed the same role and gave the planet its name. Its designation as the "Fire Star" in China was also a reference to its red color, which evoked war and calamity. These early observations led to the attribution of mythological and astrological meanings based on the planets color and irregular movements.

With the invention of the telescope, our knowledge of Mars gained significant momentum. Galileo Galilei was among the first to observe Mars with a telescope, though he could not discern any details. In the 17th century, Christiaan Huygens and Giovanni Cassini calculated the planets rotation period and axial tilt by observing Mars polar ice caps and dark surface features. In the late 19th century, structures described as "canali" (natural channels) by Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli were misinterpreted by astronomers like Percival Lowell as "irrigation canals built by Martians." This assumption inspired works such as H.G. Wells "The War of the Worlds," giving birth to the figure of the Martian invader in popular culture.

The Space Age replaced all these speculations about Mars with scientific facts. In the 1960s, NASAs Mariner missions showed that the surface of Mars was cratered, arid, and devoid of signs of life. The Viking missions in 1976 achieved the first successful landings, providing detailed images from the surface and atmospheric data, though experiments searching for life yielded no conclusive results. Since the beginning of the 21st century, rovers such as Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and most recently Perseverance have examined Mars geological history, the past presence of water, and potential habitability conditions in unprecedented detail. Perseverances Ingenuity helicopter opened a new door for future exploration by performing the first controlled flight on another planet. These missions have transformed Mars from a mythological figure into a tangible scientific laboratory waiting to be explored—one that may have harbored life in the past and perhaps will in the future.

Physical Structure

Mars, like other planets in the "Terrestrial Planet" category, has a solid surface and a distinct internal structure, yet it is quite different from Earth. At approximately half the diameter and one-tenth the mass of Earth, Mars possesses a much thinner, carbon dioxide-dominated atmosphere (95% CO2), unlike our planet. This thin atmosphere is insufficient to retain the planets surface temperature and frequently causes massive dust storms. Its surface derives its characteristic reddish hue from being rich in iron oxide (rust), earning it the nickname "the Red Planet."

The surface features of Mars provide striking evidence of the planets violent geological past. Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the Solar System, is nearly three times the height of Everest, with a base spanning an area the size of France. The Valles Marineris canyon system, stretching along the equator, is a massive rift covering a distance nearly the width of the United States. Both poles host ice caps composed of water ice and frozen carbon dioxide. Regarding its internal structure, Mars is thought to possess a dense iron and nickel core, but it lacks an active liquid outer core dynamo like Earths. This is the primary reason the planet lacks a global magnetic field; the loss of the magnetic field it possessed billions of years ago significantly contributed to its atmosphere escaping into space and Mars becoming the arid, cold world it is today. Seismic measurements conducted by the InSight mission provide more detailed information about Mars internal structure and offer new data on the dimensions of its core and the stratification of its mantle.
