The discovery of Makemake is a milestone that redefined the boundaries of the Solar System. This icy dwarf planet was discovered on March 31, 2005, by a team led by Mike Brown at the Palomar Observatory, with contributions from Chad Trujillo and David Rabinowitz. Initially designated "2005 FY9" upon its discovery, the object became a key link in a series of discoveries—alongside other large Kuiper Belt objects like Eris and Haumea—that led the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to redefine the term "planet" in 2006 and resulted in Pluto being reclassified as a dwarf planet. These discoveries revealed that the Solar System is much more crowded and diverse than we once thought.

The name Makemake comes from the Rapa Nui mythology of Easter Island, where Makemake is the creator of humanity and the god of fertility. This choice of name carries a symbolic reference to its distance and perhaps the potential for life in distant corners; much like the islands mysterious moai statues, Makemake keeps its own secrets hidden in its depths. Unfortunately, no space mission has yet been organized to visit Makemake, making it one of the least explored large bodies in the Solar System. This also serves as an indication that it remains an exciting target for future missions. Physical Structure

The physical structure of Makemake reflects the general characteristics of objects in the coldest and most distant regions of the solar system. Its surface is covered by freezing temperatures around -240°C, where even the weak light from the Sun barely reaches. Spectroscopic observations show that Makemakes surface is largely covered in volatile ices such as frozen methane, ethane, and nitrogen. The presence of methane ice is particularly dominant, suggesting the possibility that it could form a very thin and transient atmosphere by evaporating and freezing through seasonal cycles, similar to Pluto. Its surface is quite bright and has a slightly reddish hue; this redness may indicate the presence of tholins, which are complex organic molecules formed under the influence of solar radiation or cosmic rays. While these tholins give Makemake its distinctive color, they also provide important information about the chemical evolution of the surface. Although we do not have direct observations of Makemakes internal structure, comparisons with other dwarf planets and density estimates provide us with some clues. Most likely, Makemake also possesses a solid rocky core, which is surrounded by a thick icy mantle composed of water ice and other frozen volatiles. Internal heat sources, such as radioactive decay, could influence the dynamics of this icy mantle. However, considering Makemakes relatively small size and its distance from the Sun, the possibility of active geological processes or a subsurface liquid water ocean, as seen on Pluto, is lower. Nevertheless, the secrets hidden in the depths of such icy worlds remain one of the most exciting targets for future exploration.
