How a Solar Eclipse Works
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves exactly between the Earth and the Sun. Because the Moon and the Sun appear to be the exact same size in our sky (a glorious cosmic coincidence where the Sun is 400x larger but 400x further away), the Moon completely covers the Sun's disk.

How a Lunar Eclipse Works (The Blood Moon)
A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth moves exactly between the Sun and the Moon. In this situation, the Earth casts a massive shadow over the Moon. Unlike a solar eclipse, which only lasts a few minutes in a tiny path, a lunar eclipse can be seen by half the entire planet at once and lasts for hours.
During a "Total" Lunar Eclipse, the moon doesn't go completely dark. Instead, sunlight passes through Earth's atmosphere, which filters out the blue light. Only red and orange light bends around the Earth to hit the moon, making the moon glow in an eerie red hue—giving it the nickname, the Blood Moon.
