How to Read the Numbers on a Pair of Binoculars

Warning Signs of a Telescope Not Worth Buying
- Advertised by magnification. "525x!" on the box means the maker has nothing better to say. Useful maximum magnification is roughly 2x the aperture in millimetres — a 70 mm scope tops out near 140x on a good night.
- 0.965 inch eyepieces. An obsolete size. Standard is 1.25 inch, and you will want to buy eyepieces later.
- A plastic rack-and-pinion focuser. It will flex, and focus is the one thing you adjust constantly.
- A bundled 3x Barlow used to inflate the magnification claim. Empty magnification on a small aperture gives you a bigger, dimmer, blurrier image.
- An equatorial mount under 70 mm of aperture. All of the complexity, none of the payoff.
